7/3/2009 But wait! There's more!A Mass of Christian Burial for Billy Mays, the loud but friendly fellow on television commercials, is being celebrated today at a parish in western Pennsylvania.
Requiescat in pace.
If the homily focuses on faith in the Resurrection, the obvious tie-in line for Mr. Mays' funeral would be:
But wait! There's more! 5/30/2008 Lorenzo Odone - requiescat in paceLorenzo Odone, whose life was the focus of the movie "Lorenzo's Oil", passed away today - one day after his 30th birthday but more than 20 years after doctors had predicted he would die.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him. 3/20/2007 Another rescue by GandalfA 12-year-old Boy Scout, lost for more than three days in the North Carolina woods, was found today thanks to a search dog named Gandalf (the name of the Wizard in books by J.R.R. Tolkien who saves hobbits and the entire free world ).
11/4/2006 Bishop LarkinThe Most Reverend William Thomas Larkin, Bishop Emeritus of Saint Petersburg, Florida, died at his home in Clearwater early Saturday, November 4, 2006. He was 83 and has served as a bishop for 27 years and as a priest for 59 years. May he rest in peace.
He was born March 31, 1923 in Mount Morris, New York and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida, May 15, 1947. He then studied theology at the Angelicum where he befriended another graduate priest, Father Karol Józef Wojtyla, who as the great Pope John Paul II would appoint him Bishop of St. Petersburg April 18, 1979, and consecrate him bishop on the 27th of the following month. He retired for reasons of health November 29, 1988.
He was very good to me and I deeply mourn his passing.
Requiescat in pace. 11/7/2005 Monsignor John P. McNultyServed on this earth as a priest for 62 years until Christ called him home last Friday.
His homilies and his radio messages quietly expressed a determined faith in Jesus Christ with the measured tones of a newsreader occasionally ornamented with notes of gothic horror.
He also cherished a special devotion to Christmas and the celebration of new life. He served as a pastor, as an assistant to an Archbishop, as a champion of respect for life, as a promoter of spiritual renewal - whatever the Lord wanted.
Euge, serve bone et fidélis:
intra in gáudium Dómini tui Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine.
Et lux perpetua luceat ei.
Requiescat in pace.
Amen.
Anima eius
et animae omnium fidelium defunctorum
per misericordiam Dei
requiescant in pace.
Amen. 9/3/2005 KatrinaA pretty name for an atrocious catastrophe. May God bless the victims: eternal light and peace for the dead, grace and hope for the living. May he also give blessings and strength to those who care for these devastated people. I was very glad this afternoon to speak with a friend of mine from New Orleans. His family is out of harm’s way, having left the area before the storm hit, but they have lost everything. There are others I know there. I hope they are well and safe. May we all unite to help the displaced rebuild their lives and may the city of New Orleans become new again. 6/10/2005 While I was outWow. I've really neglected this blog! My last post was in January (about a TV show) and so much has happened since then: not the least of which was the passing of Pope John Paul II (soon to be known as Pope St. John Paul the Great) and the election of Pope Benedict XVI! I need to do better. 1/19/2005 The Amazing Race continuesThe Amazing Race this season started well but dragged for a little while (in Scandanavia and Senegal). Last week's episode in Corsica was better and this week's in Ethiopia was surprisingly interesting. Blogging Long GoneLife was a bit busy for me over the past month and I neglected my blogging. I will try to do better. 12/17/2004 The Second ApprenticeThere are only three “Reality Shows” that I have followed. My favorite is The Amazing Race. The Apprentice comes in a very distant second (and American Idol in a third place galaxy far, far away). The tasks are what interest me the most on The Apprentice. Some of the tasks this season were especially intriguing, as relatively untrained, inexperienced people were asked to invent a new bottle and marketing campaign for Pepsi (in two days), to create an innovative in-store catalog for Levi Strauss (in two days), to renovate a house (in two days), etc. For some time I’ve thought Kelly (who won last night) the strongest candidate: a consistent leader and winner on the tasks, a great resume, and a solid personality. Of course, like Bill, the winner from the previous season, the solid personalities who eventually win are not the ones who get the most screen time. |
